Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus
Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles, CA
Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus (1884–1967) was a groundbreaking trailblazer in education, social justice, and general welfare for older adults. In 1916, she was appointed as the first ever female high school principal in the state of California at East Los Angeles High School in Lincoln Heights. During her time there, she changed the name to what is now known as Abraham Lincoln High School, hoping to inspire its diverse student population and community. After many years of teaching and being her mother’s primary caretaker, Dr. Andrus came to the realization that many retired teachers did not have health insurance nor pensions. Because of this, Dr. Andrus founded the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA) in 1947. After many successful years, many non-educators sought after the benefits of being a member of the NRTA that Dr. Andrus changed the name to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) in 1958. She made it clear that the AARP’s purpose was, “... to help aging folk realize life’s possibilities.”
