A Birthday Celebration in the Heart of LA

It was incredible to mark another year of open streets in the heart of Los Angeles. We biked, walked, jogged, skated, and danced our way across 6 miles of open streets together.

This all began with one big question: "What would happen if LA streets were closed to cars for a day – and opened up to people?"

Over a decade ago, on October 10, 2010, CicLAvia held its first event, stretching from East Hollywood to Boyle Heights. It was a celebration of joy – and it showed what was possible when Angelenos come together to reimagine Los Angeles.

It's incredible how much has changed since we first hit the streets, over a decade ago: there are more bike lanes and pedestrian spaces, a greater use of public transit, and more people are finding ways to walk, skate, or bike to their destinations.

Dozens of organizations joined us on the streets, from LACMA and the LA Phil to the Bob Baker Marionette Theater, REI, and the L.A. Zoo – and we enjoyed eats and treats at local restaurants in Chinatown, Boyle Heights, MacArthur Park and Civic Center, as well as a few packed bakeries. We posed for photos (with the Designing in Color art installation and the Snap Yourself roving photo booth) and played on Pokemon Go and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite apps to discover even more in our city, thanks to Niantic.

Over a hundred Angelenos got a Covid-19 vaccine (thanks to Shared Harvest), hundreds more received free helmets, and countless participants experienced new art, murals, and scattered sights across downtown.

For over ten years and 37 events across 226 miles, CicLAvia has continued to turn public streets into public parks for the day. Together with 1.8M of you (and counting!), we create open spaces to walk, bike, skate, play, and experience Los Angeles in new ways. We’ve inspired more people to take advantage of public transportation, bike lanes, and pedestrian centers, and to enjoy urban life in LA without a car.

Our next event is just a few weeks away! Join us for CicLAvia–South LA on Sunday, December 5, from 9 am to 3 pm.

It’s thanks to the incredible support from people like you that we are back on the streets again. Join our CicLAvia Street Stars to help us make this year our best yet. Make a regular donation in support of open streets in Los Angeles, and get exclusive gifts in return.
