The LA area this week has a lot of free, fun opportunities to learn, be with community, and do some good. Nature, history, stars! Get on out there and enjoy it all! Here's our curated list of mid-October fun activities that won't cost you a dime. 

October 16

Get to some green space

Need a little nature this Tuesday? Check out the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, where admission is free every third Tuesday of the month. The grounds are open from 9am to 4:30pm, and you can take in the gorgeous 127-acre botanical garden and historical site located in what was the heart of the historic Rancho Santa Anita in the city of Arcadia.

A chance at a new frontier in your knowledge of California history

Take advantage of a free tour at the California African American Museum this Friday from 1pm to 2pm. The museum’s history curators, Tyree Boyd-Pates and Taylor Bythewood-Porter, will lead California Bound: Slavery on the New Frontier 1848-1865  to help you “discover how California's stance on slavery oscillated and impacted African Americans in the state before, during, and after the Civil War.”

Help heal the beach with Heal the Bay

Spend your morning at the beach engaging with your community and improving the environment. Grab a trash bag and head to Nothin’ But Sand: Santa Monica Beach Cleanup from 10-12pm with Heal the Bay.

Star party at Griffith Observatory

Visit one of the most iconic buildings in Los Angeles, the Griffith Observatory, for their public star party from 2pm to 9:45pm. These monthly parties are free and out of this world.

Opening of the National Geographic Photo Ark exhibition

Time to get wild! From 11pm to 4pm, bring the family for a day of fun at the Annenberg Space for Photography as they celebrate the opening of the National Geographic Photo Ark exhibition by showcasing some truly stunning natural images.
