CicLAvia joined with AARP Los Angeles to create a series of virtual CivSalons – dynamic presentations and discussions that highlight culture and civic issues in LA. In three webinars, we showcased Angelenos who are reclaiming the outdoors and staying connected with their communities. Together we heard their stories, learned about their favorite activities, and explored the communities they live in.
Watch any or all three of the recorded CivSalons, and get a new perspective on our city, and on the way that individuals are making it more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly.
Joni Yung
Joni Yung, a yogi, podcaster and frequent CicLAvia volunteer, joined us on November 4, 2021 to share how she has stayed connected during the pandemic.
AARP's Stephanie Ramirez and CicLAvia's Tafarai Bayne hosted the discussion, and Joni even shared a few of her favorite food spots across a dozen LA neighborhoods.
Swee (Ool) Woo
On November 18, 2021, we talked to Swee (Ool) Woo, a mold-breaking 65-year old longboarder and CicLAvia icon, about her open streets journey.
Woo wanted to be more active and get exercise over the last decade, and learned to skateboard at CicLAvia Sundays. She looks for excuses to bike or skate around Los Angeles, whether short errands or recreational trips. It has become a passion – and she tries to never miss one of our events.
Aubrey Provost and Melba Provost
Aubrey and Melba Provost are among LA's (and CicLAvia's) most devoted cyclists. They have been married (and best friends) for over 60 years, they ride matching bikes, they advocate for more bike safety, they have been regulars at CicLAvia events since the very first one, and they are CicLAvia Street Stars!
On December 2, 2021, they talked with Tafarai Bayne about their experience at CicLAvia, their work on the Bicycle Advisory Committee, and their own history in Los Angeles.
Make sure you're on our email list to get updates and news about future CivSalons and open streets events.
