Local Gems: South LA (Western Ave)

Join us for the fourth CicLAvia Sunday of the 2024 season—and our 53rd program since 2010! CicLAvia—South LA (Western Ave) is on Sunday, June 23rd, from 9am - 4pm. 

South LA is a 16-square-mile area in the southern end of Los Angeles which consists of 25 neighborhoods. Take a look at some of the MANY local gems in the area. Be sure to also use the CicLAvia Interactive Digital Map to plan out your day!

Places To Eat + Shop

South LA Cafe
1700 Browning Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90062

South LA Cafe is located on the corner of MLK Blvd and Western Ave. They pride themselves on being “Black-owned, family-owned & community-owned,” and provide fresh and affordable food to the community since 2019.

 

Sonsonate Grill
5011 S Western Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90062

Sonsonate Grill is a Central American eatery known for their pupusas—thick flatbreads from El Salvador—and many more authentic eats!

 

El Arca Bakery and Restaurant
1818 W 54th St, Los Angeles, CA 90062

El Arca Bakery and Restaurant is a small business in the South LA area and is known for their interpretation of classic Mexican dishes and their commitment to providing only high quality fresh ingredients.

 

C.W. and Chris Fish & Chicken
6512 S Western Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90047

C.W. and Chris Fish & Chicken is a Black-owned small business in South LA known for its Southern-styled fish fried meals, fried chicken wings, and shrimp. Their side dishes such as hush puppies, collard greens, and coleslaw sometimes even steal the show! 

 

Baba's Vegan Cafe
6619 S Western Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90047

Although Baba’s Vegan Cafe will be closed for a private Friends of CicLAvia lunch, they are known for being one of the few Black-owned vegan restaurants in the Historic Crenshaw District area. Swing by after CicLAvia (4pm) for plant-based dishes such as their lentil burger, burritos, and sweet desserts!

 

M'Dears Soul Food Restaurant
7717 S Western Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90047

M’Dears Soul Food Restaurant prides itself on its Southern hospitality and the cozy feel their cafe brings to its customers. They specialize in soul food, homemade desserts, and Creole dishes.

 

Dulan's Soul Food Kitchen
1714 W Century Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90047

Adolf Dulan, also known as the “King of Soul Food,” started Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen in the early 2000s and has been serving the South LA community comforting meals ever since. With a 2023 James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur Nomination, Greg Dulan and his brother Terry Dulan carry on the family tradition serving the area with two locations less than 4 miles apart.

Expo / Western Station Art
1573 W Exposition Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA

If you’re taking Metro to CicLAvia, make sure to check out Ephemeral Views: A Visual Essay by artist Ronald J. Llanos, located within the Expo/Western (E Line) Station. A constant observer of city life, Llanos presents snapshot sketches of everyday activities in South LA. The art panels are designed to unfold like the pages of an open book, depicting scenes and characters from the neighborhood’s active streets.

 

Black Panther / Chadwick Boseman mural by @ezra_one

Next to Handler Pharmacy, on the corner of W 48th and Western Ave, is a mural by @ezra_one of Marvel superhero Black Panther, played by the late actor Chadwick Boseman.

 

Slauson Super Mall
1600 W Slauson Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90047

The Slauson Super Mall, with over 120 vendors, is among the best shopping centers in Los Angeles, meeting the needs of one and all. With vendors selling a range of goods, including jewelry, clothing, and fragrances, this swap meet has something for everyone! Open since 1985, it has been a South LA staple for nearly 40 years!

You’ll find two special murals on the corner of Western Ave and 69th St. One of them, by @wondercrush_la, contains the words, “Black Lives Matter,” surrounded by flowers. The other features the iconic late Los Angeles basketball player, Kobe Bryant, painted by @smart_spf.

 

DAG Riders Bicycle Shop

The DAG Riders Bicycle Shop is a small business which has provided CicLAvia participants with FREE bike repairs for many years. Swing by their storefront to check out bikes for sale, get bike repairs, or just to chat and thank them for all their dedicated time to our programs!

 

Green Spaces in South LA
Along Western Ave.

There are multiple green spaces and parks available through South LA as well as along the route. Many are named after notable African-American leaders and changemakers such as MLK Jr. Park, Harvard Park, St. Andrews Recreation, and Jesse Owens Park. Discover your favorite along the route for a relaxing break in the shade!

 

South LA EcoLab Zone / Transformative Climate Communities Program (TCC) Project
Western Ave (between Vernon Ave and Gage Ave)

South LA EcoLab—a collective of committed social and environmental impact partners in LA—has initiated a plan that will add much needed additional green spaces in South LA, improving the livelihood and health of its residents. Stop by the Western Hub on event day to learn more and meet with some of the local community groups working on this dynamic local initiative.
