Event Recap: Kicking off the 2019 Season with Fun in the Sun AND Rain

Our 2019 season opener proved that no matter the weather, we love to come together in the open streets.

The 29th CicLAvia was our first car-free street event of 2019, our third visit to Culver City and Mar Vista, our first trip through Palms, and a great opportunity to experience CicLAvia—Culver City Meets Mar Vista + Palms in the sun and rain. In case you missed it, here are a few highlights from the event.

The rain added to the joyous atmosphere. A heavy drizzle began just before the 9am kickoff and seemed to produce even bigger smiles in anticipation of the chance to play in the rain.

Just when the rain started to fall the hardest, Culver City Vice Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells broke out into song, serenading attendees with her rendition of “Singing in the Rain.”

Fun fact, this iconic scene (pictured below) was filmed along Sunday's route through Culver City.

Then the rain gave way to sunshine, and everyone let out a sigh of relief!

The smiles continued for miles.

No matter the weather, we pedaled, scooted, jogged, and strolled past iconic landmarks. Then we slowed down and took a closer look at local gems along the route such as the King Fahad Mosque, The Culver Studios, Kirk Douglas Theatre, and Sony Picture Studios, among others.

All in all, we think Culver City Vice Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells said it best, CicLAvia has a superpower. It helps us reimagine our streets as vast public spaces.”

We agree, and cannot wait to visit and reimagine more public streets with you. Save the date for April 28, and stay tuned for more info on our biggest season yet!
